Specialist Classical Music Program
Year 8 2010
Students residing outside the Rossmoyne Senior High School boundary who have a passion for and special ability in classical music, are invited to apply for entry to the school’s Classical Music Program.
The music program at Rossmoyne is progressive, rigorous and widely recognised for excellence. In 2008, approximately 250 students from Years 8 to 12 participate in the program. A talented team of music specialists led by the Director of Music includes school-based teachers, as well as instrumental teachers and directors of ensembles from the School of Instrumental Music. Students and staff enjoy the benefits of learning and teaching in a contemporary performing arts centre which is especially suited to orchestral music. The development over time of a strong classical music focus at Rossmoyne is compatible with the expressed aspirations and needs of the students and parent community.
Until this year, Rossmoyne has been a local intake school except for students who are selected into the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Languages program. Hence, the music program overwhelmingly comprises local talent and these students have consistently attained outstanding levels of achievement. From 2009, in recognition of sustained excellence in music education, Rossmoyne is designated as a Department of Education and Training secondary school specialising in classical music. This designation opens the opportunity for students from outside the school zone to apply for entry to Rossmoyne’s Classical Music Program. These students will study and perform alongside musically talented peers from Rossmoyne’s local and GATE intake. Together, they will enhance, further, the depth of excellence of the school’s Classical Music Program.
Classical Music students at Rossmoyne study a compulsory course that includes class music as well as choral, ensemble and orchestra. They enjoy the benefits of specialist instrumental teachers for every instrument and ensembles are provided for students of all abilities from the very highest levels of making music in schools. Music students are required to attend rehearsals before and after school, and they are also required to attend evening and weekend performances and camps.
Rossmoyne offers students in the Classical Music Program the opportunity to study alongside other musically talented peers as well as to enjoy the benefits of the broad and enriching curriculum provided across all Learning Areas.
