The School Volunteer Program (SVP)

A volunteer from the local community is matched up with a student identified as someone who would benefit from having a mentor.  The volunteer assists a young person on a one-to-one basis and becomes a friend and role model to that student.

Mentors visit to the school during normal school hours, usually once a week for one period. In this time they spend quality time with their student, providing encouragement and friendship.

All volunteer mentors attend an orientation workshop prior to commencing to enable them to fully understand their role.  Mentors have the “Working With Children” clearance.

The program provides information workshops free-of-charge for mentors on topics such as;

  • drugs, young people and you
  • listening & communication skills
  • reading made easy
  • issues facing young people today

Mentors are supported by the School Volunteer Program coordinator.
