Specialist Classical Music Program
Keys to musical success
The selective-entry Specialist Classical Music program is for students who have a passion for and special ability in classical music. Learn more about the music program.
Eligibility to apply
Students who live outside of the local-intake area are eligible to apply for the Specialist Classical Music Program.
Specialist Classical Music applicants should:
- be currently enrolled in Year 6.
- have a passion for music.
- be taking instrumental* classes in Primary School (through IMMS or privately).
- have a special ability in music.
- be prepared to complete four full years of music study (Year 7 to Year 10).
*Students may continue with their current instrument or be offered the opportunity to learn one of the following orchestral instruments. In the application form students are asked to indicate four (4) instruments that they might be interested in learning including; bassoon, double bass, euphonium, french horn, oboe, saxophone, trombone, tuba, viola.
Process for local students
Students who live within the school’s local intake area and wish to continue their music studies at Rossmoyne Senior High School should:
- Indicate their preference to study music on their enrolment form.
- Attend the audition when invited after commencing Year 7.
Students who are successful at audition will begin in the music program in Year 7 and continue with music until the end of Year 10.
Applications for students who live outside of the local-intake area
Students who do not live within the school’s local in-take area are eligible to apply for the Specialist Classical Music program through the selective-entry process:
Applications for Year 7 2025 applications are now closed.
- The online application form, video audition, and supporting materials must be submitted online by 4pm, Friday 22 March, 2024.
- Applicants will be short listed based on their audition video and notified in May.
- Selected applicants will be invited to attend a Music Aptitude Test on Saturday 25 May 2024.
- Applicants who reach the threshold score will be invited to attend an interview and audition in Week 2 of the July School Holidays and Week 1 of Term 3.
- All applicants will be notified of their outcome in writing by the end of July 2024.
Students who are accepted into the program will begin in the music program in Year 7 and continue with music until the end of Year 10. Successful applicants will be required to participate fully in the program including afterhours activities such as rehearsals, camps and competitions.

Video audition
An audition video and other supporting materials must be submitted online by 4pm, Friday 22 March 2024.
The audition video is submitted via the link within the online application form.
Please ensure your video:
- includes a self-introduction at the start of the video. “Hello, my name is __, and I will be playing ___.”
- is a performance of ONE song on ONE instrument in a style of the applicant’s choosing (classical, contemporary, jazz, musical theatre).
- shows the performing student alone and “in shot” for the entire video.
- is named with your student’s name (e.g. Fred.Smith.mov)
- is submitted using the link provided in the application form.
Your video should be:
- a maximum of 3 minutes.
- a simple one-shot video with no audio layering.
- a file size less than 200 GB.
Notes and tips:
- Please feel welcome to film on a mobile phone.
- Please do not professionally produce or excessively edit your video.
- Solo or accompanied singing will be considered.
- Drum kit auditions will not be considered.
- The standard of the audition video should match the current standard of the child’s musical instruction at the time of application. Music staff recommend that applicants play a piece that can be played confidently and well. Playing from memory is encouraged but not obligatory.
- Video auditions will remain confidential and will only be viewed by the Rossmoyne Senior High School selection panel for the purpose of the online audition process. On completion of the application process all video content will be destroyed.
Supporting materials
An audition video and other supporting materials must be submitted online by 4pm, 22 March, 2024.
Supporting materials are to be submitted to our Enrolment Officer, Tracy Bruinsma via email: tracy.bruinsma@education.wa.edu.au.
Supporting material to include:
- Copies of the applicant’s previous year’s Semester 2 school report.
- A passport size photo of the applicant.
- Details of any musical awards (maximum 2) received by the applicant.
- Evidence of payment of the $20.00 (non-refundable) application fee.
