INDIAN OCEAN ENGINEERING EXCURSION
A selection of Year 10 extension classes visited the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre at UWA on 27 June.
The group were introduced to a brief lesson on the science of oceanography, followed by an Ocean Feud, inspired by the popular game show Family Feud, to test their understanding of the material presented.
Students went on a tour of the National Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility, after which they worked in teams to try to meet the energy demands of each state, using both conventional and renewable sources.
From the research centre, they went to Ezone to explore the dynamics of Swan River- Exploring estuarine mixing. In this session, students used a large-scale model of the Swan River estuary to examine the processes of tides, currents, and water mixing and understand the importance of estuaries in coastal ecosystems.
The last stop was to the Coastal and Offshore Engineering Laboratory, a large-scale testing facility. Students predicted how subsea structures behaved on the ocean seabed.
