NAIDOC WEEK AT ROSSMOYNE
Since 1975, NAIDOC Week has been held each year to celebrate and elevate the voices, cultures, and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme, ‘Fifty Years of Deadly’, honours five decades of celebrating culture, sharing stories, recognising leadership, and acknowledging the many people who have helped shape NAIDOC Week into what it is today.
At Rossmoyne Senior High School, our community proudly embraced this important week through a wide range of activities centred on Culture, Connection and Community.
The week began with students watching a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Daniel Garlett during Homeroom, creating Indigenous bracelets, participating in a Lino Tile Carving Art Workshop, and entering our NAIDOC Colouring-in Competition, which remains open until Week 1, Term 3.
Students also enjoyed a variety of cultural and sporting activities, including the Longest AFL Kick Competition, Longest Golf Drive Competition, Indigenous documentaries featuring Patty Mills and Cathy Freeman, resin pop-stick art, hair scrunchie making, and a range of Indigenous-inspired art projects.
A highlight of the week was welcoming students from Clontarf Aboriginal College, who joined our students for Homeroom activities before taking part in friendly volleyball and basketball matches.
Our celebrations concluded with a special NAIDOC Community Lunch, prepared by our Certificate II Hospitality students, where Follow the Dream students and families, invited community members and Rossmoyne staff came together to celebrate our students’ achievements. We also celebrated the birthday of one of our Follow the Dream students, making the occasion even more special.
A huge thank you to our Follow the Dream students, Clontarf Academy, Hospitality students, staff, and everyone who helped organise and support this fantastic week. Together, we created meaningful opportunities to learn, connect, and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
